Monday Morning Inspiration

The following images are from Alan Garner’s Book of British Fairy Tales, Delcourt Press 1984, drawn and cut by illustrator Derek Collard. These illustrations are relief block prints, I assume, and in my opinion, are perfect companions to Mr. Garner’s text. The decorated borders recall the Celtic and Anglo-Saxon origin of many of the stories, as well as the work of William Morris and his influential association with the Arts and Crafts movement.

All images © Derek Collard. There isn’t a lot of information available on Derek Collard, but this one and several other books he’s illustrated are at alibris.com. Enjoy!

Thanks Bernardo! I first came across these illustrations on a site called nocloo.com. Great site except
all the images have a big logo/watermark across the front. But I liked Collard’s stuff so much, I went online
and found an old, used library copy for myself.
