illostribute.com | investigation through interpretation

About

Illostribute.com is a new, collaborative illustration blog, conceived and edited by illustrator & artist Toby Thane Neighbors. The idea is to pay tribute to “master” illustrators (and occasionally fine artists) by seriously investigating their work, through interpretation. Why? Copying the work of master artists, in order to more fully comprehend the decision-making process by which they navigated from blank canvas to masterpiece, is an ancient and valuable exercise. This is how the process will work:

An illustrator or artist from the past is selected. Contemporary, working illustrators are invited to choose an image of said master and create their own interpretation or copy. These collections will then be posted publicly for the visual benefit of all. This exercise will hopefully encourage the growth and development of each participating illustrator, as well as afford numerous opportunities for friendship and exchange.

The following images illustrate exactly what illostribute is to be all about. Lucas Cranach II’s Portrait of a Woman, 1564 and Pablo Picasso’s linocut of the same name, from 1958.
